In order to keep up with a rapidly changing market, it is crucial for anyone who manages digital content to prioritize speed and flexibility. Staying relevant means companies must commit to continuous innovation and rapid improvements. This is especially true in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has accelerated shifting trends in consumer behavior and technological innovations.

COVID Is Making Us All Lose Our Heads

Headless systems have been steadily rising in popularity over the past few years, but the onset of the coronavirus pandemic became the tipping point for a widespread embrace of this model. Pandemic lockdowns have created an overwhelming need for digital connectivity, and people are consuming content on an ever-expanding variety of devices.

Over the past year, companies have responded to changes in consumer behavior by focusing on engaging their audiences in a more personalized manner, through an increasingly diverse array of channels.

To review — headless content management systems separate the presentation layer (the head) of a digital platform from its content repository (the body). The content data is made available in the form of a standardized API (RESTful/GraphQL) making it available to present on ANY digital service.

This creates a smooth experience across channels by making it easy to quickly and seamlessly adapt content to multiple new platforms (a mobile app, another website, etc.) without disruption to existing ones. This even applies to data that can be consumed by the public such as COVID stat data, movie times, or restaurant menus.

Using this model, marketing teams and the development organizations they work with are able to seamlessly collaborate on frontend updates, integrations, and redesigns.

Companies who want to adopt new platforms or integrate new capabilities without replacing their legacy platforms are going to have a difficult time keeping up. Traditional content management systems can’t accommodate platforms they’re not originally designed for. They require continuous maintenance and demand more time and resources than the alternative.
