At the end of an exceptionally challenging year, let’s take a look at some of the positive things that happened in 2020. The tech industry is constantly evolving in staggering and impressive ways. These are just a few inventions from this past year that have improved our lives in large and small ways.

Let’s start with arguably the biggest invention of the year: the Coronavirus vaccine. Developed in record time, the vaccine relies on a new technology based on a genetic material called mRNA. By the end of 2020, the US is on track to receive tens of millions of doses, and some cities have already begun administering the shots. Though some of us will need to wait until Spring or Summer of 2021, we’re finally feeling hopeful that there’s alight at the end of the tunnel.

In our opinion, this is the BEST news in tech of the entire year.

ACCESSIBILITY: Inclusive Gaming Tools

In order for product design to be truly useful, it needs to be accessible to the user: any user, anywhere, at any time. For the gaming industry, one such important consideration is users who live with disabilities. This year, Logitech G worked with different accessibility organizations to develop a set of controllers that do just that. The Adaptive Gaming Kit is a comprehensive set of controls that makes it easier for people with disabilities to game.

GADGETS: A Powerful Home Planetarium

If the Moonfarmer website didn’t already make it clear, we think space is pretty cool. That’s why we’re starstruck over the new The Dark Skys DS1. This home planetarium is a powerful and clear representation of the night sky, capable of projecting 4.1 million stars onto your ceiling via a chrome-on-glass disc. It even comes with a shooting star feature! 💫

If we didn’t already work on the moon, we’d have to get one of these for each of our home offices.

APPS: A Digital Recipe Box Made For Sharing

If you’ve been honing your cooking skills while stuck in quarantine, you may have amassed a large collection of recipe links. Want The Recipe allows you to save and organize these recipes in one central place. The app also functions as a social-media feed, allowing you swap recipes with other users, discover new food blogs and connect with other like-minded chefs. Now you can stay connected with loved ones through the most powerful unifier we know: food.

…….ok ok ok, we admit we’re a little bit biased here. Moonfarmer designed and developed the app, but all innovation credit goes to creators Caitlin Maglathin and Nyssa LaClair.

AEROSPACE: Exploring New Worlds

The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover is paving the way for human exploration beyond the Moon. Launched in July, it is projected to land in February of 2021 to begin collecting samples, characterizing the planet’s geology and climate, and searching for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will also ferry a helicopter named Ingenuity, the first aircraft to fly in a controlled way on another planet.

Maybe one day we’ll get to change our name to Marsfarmer.

COMMUNICATIONS: Zoom

(ok this isn’t a real screenshot of zoom, but don’t we all look nice?)

Video conferencing software is easily one of the most important types of technology of 2020. Through the ongoing pandemic, businesses have been able to operate remotely thanks to video conferencing solutions, and despite record unemployment rates, many fortunate Americans have been able to remain employed. The technology’s global market spiked 110% in this year alone.

Of the many video conferencing platforms on the market, Zoom came out on top. The low barrier of entry, intuitive interface, and fun features like emoji reacts and virtual backgrounds (among others) has made Zoom the de facto platform for millions of people. For our team, Zoom has been indispensable for keeping our tight-knit team connected.

Beyond benefits to the workforce (and perhaps more importantly), this technology has enabled human connection in a year of distance and isolation. The need to see and hear one another is deeply human — in order to make it through the challenging times, it’s important to remember that we’re not alone.
